Having been living in Australia for 5 years, I was considered lucky to be placed in Victoria, the state well known for their beautiful landscapes. It is almost always perfect for a hike, a camp or any other outdoor activities you can think of. Our destination this time round is to Wilsons Promontory. Making it a worth while road trip, we made a pit-stop by Venus Bay. One interesting and tiring activity that you can partake in Venus Bay is collecting pipis. You may do so with appropriate fishing license which you can easily buy online. It is also a good idea to read up the tips and tricks when collecting the pipis; especially how to properly collect them without destroying their ecosystem. We set up camp at Cape Liptrap coastal park, a hidden beauty in the south of Victoria. We made sure our tent was facing the ocean, so that we would wake up to a scenic view. We didn’t get to do much here; only camped a night. It was our way of taking a break from the long drive to Wilsons Promontory.

One of the best hikes in Victoria lies in the south east of Melbourne, in Wilsons Promontory. The hike up to Mount Oberon is roughly about 3.5 hours drive from the CBD. So, probably not a good idea for a day hike. I would definitely recommend you to do a “hike to your campsite” route!
Length: 6.8 km return
Time: 2 – 2.5 hrs
Grade: Easy – Medium
Maximum height: approx 558m above ground
Where: Wilsons Promontory National Park, VIC, Australia
Starting at Tidal River, where the car was parked, we walked into the Tidal River general store. As it was expected to be an approximate 1 hour hike up the mountain, we bought our lunch ready to have it at the summit, overlooking the anticipated amazing view. The hike was a straight forward path, which made safe but it a little boring. No rocks and all that jazz. In that sense, made it an easy hike, but it was inclined the entire way. So it was definitely quite tiring. After about approximately 2.8 km of walking on an inclined path, we come to a flight of stairs. After that we had to climb and maneuver over some rocks (that part got interesting) to reach to the summit. Once I was up there, I looked around and thought the view was absolutely worth the tiring/boring climb! It was so mesmerizing that we took so many pictures and almost forgotten about our lunch!

I must admit, I found the walk/hike a tad boring and tiring but the view made up for all of it. We had the “Prom Burger“. This was bought at the beginning of the hike and it was really delicious. We did not camp at their popular and populated campsite at Tidal River. In order to camp here, you need to place a ballot 6 -7 months before hand. Yeap! Everyone wants a piece of Wilsons Prom! So, we only managed to book the campsite at Little Oberon Bay. To our surprise, this campsite was perfect! A tiny bay, tucked away from the crowd made it an absolute gem!
There are a few bays in which Wilsons Prom encloses. One of the ones that we went to take a dip was Norman bay which I highly recommend. The waters were clear, shallow and you’d be enclosed, surrounded by high rocks, making it very, very exclusive. It was a indescribable feeling swimming in the bay in between the high rocks, you just have to experience it yourself. It was a crazy weekend getaway but I love my weekends crazy. The landscape in Wilsons Prom is truly beautiful. It takes your mind away from everything! Definitely a weekend trip to think about!
