Mount Buffalo National park, Australia

Named one of the oldest national parks in Australia, Mount Buffalo has many hikes and walks to offer. One of the hikes I enjoyed very much was the ‘Lake Catani walking track’ starting from Lake Catani up towards The Gorge. A medium-grade hike with a fantastic view waiting at the top! At the peak of ‘The Gorge’, we spotted a hang gliding platform! However it didn’t seem like an activity that we could partake. It looked like it was meant for professionals.

A point I always make when hiking a medium grade route, is to pack some light snacks. Water will quench your thirst after the long and tiring hike while those high-protein snacks will give you the energy to continue. Another personal indulgence of mine is to reward myself with snacks at the summit. I don’t exactly have the greatest stamina, so when I first got myself into hiking, it has been difficult. So every time I reach the summit, I feel a great sense of achievement. It is here, where I find the spot with the best view, seat myself and then slowly savour my snack.

The Horn is the highest peak in Mount Buffalo National Park. It is approximately 4 hours drive from the CBD. Definitely worth a night’s stay if you’re thinking about hiking up the mountain. Plus, you’ll get to do the other routes, picnic by the waterfall and kayak by the lake. Alright, let me get to the details

Length: 1.5km, return
Time: 45 minutes – 1 hour
Grade: Medium – Hard
Maximum Height: approx 1723m above sea level

The hike was one of the most interesting hikes in my opinion because as you walked up further, there are many rocks to climb on and maneuver your way through. Not such a straightforward path which I absolutely enjoy. You have got to make turns, bend your body and go under. Basically using all your muscles for this one. I have come up here twice, once to catch the sunrise (which wasn’t too successful) and another at broad daylight. The view was great, not that spectacular. However, the hike was super fun!

At Lake Catani, there are also campsites if you fancy roughing it up for a few nights stay. I can only imagine coming back to the tent and to the warm campfire after a long and tiring hike. It is honestly the best feeling ever! I recommend anyone to come out here if you’re looking for a good outdoor adventure. It covers almost anything outdoor you’d want to do! From hiking to camping, to kayaking to walking and picnics!
