Marysville is a medium-sized suburb about 1.5hrs drive out from the Melbourne CBD. It is on the way to Mount Buller, where most people head over for some snowboarding/skiing action! – fun in the snows!
If you’re looking for an exciting but short weekend road trip, Marysville has a enough attractions to make your trip worthwhile. Whether you choose to stay a night or not, it will be sufficient to do some of the things Marysville offers. I love driving out to Marysville. Not only it gives me a reason to stop by Badger Creek for awesome blueberry wine (this wine is one of my favourite and I highly recommend), it also has a beautiful national park, and a nearby mountain for a short hike.
Healesville
A small humble town, like most suburban town in Victoria, makes a great pit stop! There is one best kept secret about this town if you keep driving, head towards Badger Creek, you will find yourself in a blueberry wine farm and cafe. It is the only one I know of in Australia that does blueberry wine. How amazing is that? Besides wine in store, they also do sparkling, fortified, relishes, jam and serves up delicious blueberry pancakes and pies. I really love their blueberry wine, and you can’t find in the markets! They are planning to get their online store going and hopefully it will be up soon.
If you’re not sure, just pop in and ask for tasting. Even if you’re not a fan of wine, I’d suggest you stop by and have some of their blueberry dishes. If you’re willing, take a sip and it might change your mind!
Marysville
Head towards Marysville and partake in trout/salmon fishing! First timers, don’t worry, it is only a fishing farm, it won’t be too complicated. A percentage of the proceeds goes to the funds for the recovery from the bush fires which Marysville suffered back in 2009 – known as ‘black Saturday‘. Get yourself a good catch and feel good about it too? Why not.

Feeling a bit of hike? Head towards Lake Mountain for a short and simple hike. The view isn’t the best but it will do if you fancy a walk. You could also stop by Maroondah reservoir park for a picnic, or just a walk through the park. Isolate yourself from the noise and surround yourself with trees and the sounds of the birds.

During winter, Lake Mountain turns into a beautiful snow ski resort! Because it is only a 1.5hrs drive from the city, it also makes it perfect for a day hike. You can choose to walk up to the summit during the summer or during winter. Either way, it would be quite chilly up there so do make sure you have proper clothing.
Length: 5km return
Time: 2 – 2.5 hrs

Where: Lake Mountain, Marysville, VICTORIA, Australia

The hike starts at where the visitor center is. There is a restaurant and restrooms for you to use making it convenient. The hike itself was very relaxing. The routes were properly maintain and markers (orange arrows) to guide you. It would be hard to get lost in this very well marked track.
At the beginning, it starts with a steep track that rises 200m which then levels out eventually to a gentle incline towards the summit. There are three lookout points along the loop before tracking back down.
- Alps Lookout
- Sherlock Lookout
- Taggerty Lookout
The trees remained damage after the Black Saturday fires back in 2009 but it is still very pretty in my opinion. Overall a very enjoyable, relaxing hike. Go if you’re looking for something quite straight forward and simple. I highly recommend for first time hikers.
