Langkawi island is located in the north of the west coast of Peninsula Malaysia. To get there, you need to either fly or ferry across, from the peninsula. Langkawi is officially known as the Jewel of Kedah and was awarded UNESCO World Geopark status in 2007. The island has much of it’s forestry still remain intact, while small towns experience slow development.
Car and bike rentals are popular here. It was a good idea renting a car, driving allowed us to have good coverage of the island.
Langkawi does not have the smooth fine sands nor the extremely clear blue waters that you’d fine in other popular island like the Bahamas. In Malaysia, beautiful corals are best kept to be explored on the east side of the peninsula or east Malaysia. However, depending on which part of Langkawi island, you might catch a beautiful glimpse of the Andaman sea. What I really enjoyed in Langkawi was the visit to Panaroma Langkawi. It is a mini resort which is home to the famous SkyCab (cable car ride) and Sky Bridge (suspension bridge). Taking the SkyCab rewarded us with some magnificent views as we ride all the way to the top, stopping by at some lookout points. The sky bridge makes a popular tourist spot as the longest curved suspension bridge in the world.
Inside the resort there are many activities you can partake and they are family-friendly. To find out what else might interest you, click here.

Most of the cuisine here are the local Malay dishes which you can easily find along the streets. For a more upgraded experience, it may be a good idea to head to Jalan Pantai Chenang for some of the freshest seafood. Along this road, we stumbled upon this chic place called yellow cafe. They had some upbeat music playing the background with lounge chairs set up facing the beach. We enjoyed a bottle of beer while watching the sunset which was nice.
Up north the island there is a bay called Pantai Kok which is known for beautiful sunset views. We stayed in Ombak Villa, a bit old but clean, located on the west of the island, allowing us to watch the sunset anyway. The beach really isn’t something to look forward to. I’d come here for the view, a relaxed getaway from the city but that’s about it pretty much.
Langkawi island is also known for it’s Andaman sea view. Honestly, a very picturesque view but not for the price in my opinion. Take that cash and you can visit the islands on the east side of peninsula Malaysia where the waters are much friendlier to swim, snorkel and dive. I mean, what’s a sea without water activities, right?
THINGS TO DO:
- Visit the buffalo park for a mini tour and buy some buffalo mozzarella while you’re there
- Head to Jalan Pantai Chenang for seafood served at its freshest. The huge tiger prawns are mouthwatering
- Enjoy the island’s landscapes, get on the cable car ride up and be rewarded with scenic views of the mountain and sea.
- In skypark, hike to the suspension bridge, also known as sky bridge. If you’re afraid of heights, you might want to skip this
- If you feel up to the challenge, head over to the Skytrex park where you can beat yourself up going through some of the toughest obstacles. I remember doing it and my muscles were all sore the very next day.
- Make a stop at Kuah town. It is where the famous eagle bird statue rests. It is not much of a view but it does make a good photo.
- You can find a range of water activities located up north in the island, where the Andaman sea is
